Charles Shultz, age 77, died today after battling cancer. His last strip was to run on Sunday, 13 Feb. His contributions to the field were monumental, spanning a 50+ period. His "Peanuts" strip debuted on Oct.2, 1950, eventually running in over 2,400 newspapers. The Peanuts characters endeared themselves to people all over the world with their individual personalities to which everyone could associate themselves.
Among his achievements were the Reuben Award, comic art's highest honor. He received this award in 1955 and 1964. In 1978 he was named International Cartoonist of the Year. This award is voted on by other artists around the world. He began to draw as a young man. In 1943, he was drafted to serve in the US Army. Later he did art and cartoons for various companies, including the "Saturday Evening Post" magazine. His first strip was "Li'l Folks," in 1947. In 1950, the name was changed to Peanuts and the rest is history! Many of his characters were based on his own real-life experiences. He will be missed by one and all!!
