History & History Related Items

Sebastopol history:

Native Americans were the first people of this area, specifically those ofthe Miwok and Pomo groups. Sebastopol was named for the Russian seaport of Sevastopol in the 1850's. At one time, there were four other Sebastopol's in California; one in Napa County, renamed Yountville, one each in Tulare, Sacramento, and Nevada counties. Later, it became well-known as a pioneer town for canned applesauce, due to the abundance of Gravenstein apples here. In 1885, renowned horticulturist, Luther Burbank, opened an experimental nursery here known as Gold Ridge Farm. Part of the farm is still open to visitors. Sebastopol was incorporated as a city on 13 June 1902.
