This area has always been primarily agricultural and rural. It was first settled in 1834 as part of the Vallejo Land Grant. It was first incorporation on 24 March 1876 and then, reincorporated on 14 May 1889.
One of the founding fathers of St. Helena, California is Augustus Tainter. He donated land to the city. There is a Tainter St. in St. Helena named after him.

Death date for Augustus Tainter, native of Ohio
Died of Dropsy at the age of 51 and was buried in the St. Helena Cemetery.
"Augustus Tainter, an old citizen and reported to have built the first house in St
Helena, died at his residence here Wednesday night and was interred Thursday,
his funeral being attended by large concourse of people. Most of the land
titles in the western corner of town passed through him."
The records shows six interments in lot 13, Block 12 as follows:
Augustus, Margaret Sheahan Tainter, Rachel Tainter, John Tainter, Mary
Tainter, and Annie Lyons.
