A Spanish group landed here on June 18, 1775, Trinity Sunday. The leaders of the group named the area Trinity in honor of the date. The city was founded in 1850 and became the Port for the supplies for goldhunters in the upriver areas of the state. Prisoner Rock is offshore. In earlier times, the law would give the local drunkards two choices. They could either swim from the rock to shore or stay and sober up on the rock.
