Ukiah history: The Pomo Indians called this area Yokayo, which means Deep Valley or South Valley. The Anglos who came to the area changed the spelling to Ukiah. It is an active agricultural area. It is the seat of Mendocino County. The first settler, Samuel Lowry, came here in 1856. Here is a good history page for Ukiah
