Chamber of Commerce.
The Pomo Indians called this area Yokayo, which means Deep Valley or South Valley. The Anglos who came to the area changed the spelling to Ukiah. It is an active agricultural area. It is the seat of Mendocino County. The first settler, Samuel Lowry, came here in 1856.

Lake Mendocino is nearby for boating and fishing; Wineries, including Parducci and Fetzer, are nearby. Skunk Train is 24 miles to the north in Willits. Montgomery Redwoods is nearby.

Agriculture remains the number one industry in the area. Because of the fertile soil and good climate, there are many vineyards, wineries, pear orchards and wood products plants.
