History & History Related Items

Here is a history page for Union City.

Union City was settled in 1850 when John and William Horner laid out a town which they called Union City. The name is said to have come from their Sacramento River steamer named, "The Union." Many of the early settlers were gold miners who never struck it rich and found better profits in the growing of food products here in the area than they ever made in mining.

When Union City was incorporated, it also included the towns of Alvarado, Decoto and New Haven. The above history pages tells a little background on each of these communities. Union City began with just three families and has grown greatly over the years to almost around 64,000 residents.

Somewhere, there is a student who needs your help
SIB pairs students with individuals from various cultural and professional backgrounds in one-to-one mentoring relationships. The mentors help the students broaden their views, guide them to challenging and rigorous course work, help the students keep the vision of opportunity that exits for them and motivate them to persevere in the midst of many distractions. Mentors spend approximately 4-6 hours/month with their student over a 10-month period. The mentoring programs are currently taking place in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Please join the wonderful team of current mentors who share three gifts among other things: Time, Trust and Friendship, and make a difference in the life of a student. Currently, we have 600 students waiting to get matched with a mentor.
