Canon City history:

Canon City was begun on 17 January 1858 during the gold rush at Pikes Peak, though no town was actually built at the time. In 1859, the claim was jumped and by February 1860, the first building was erected. Oil was discovered here in 1862 and several ore smelters were built in the area by 1891.

The tilde was added officially to the name of the city in 1994. It is one of the few cities in the US with such a designation.
