History & History Related Items

Canon City was begun on 17 January 1858 during the gold rush at Pikes Peak, though no town was actually built at the time. In 1859, the claim was jumped and by February 1860, the first building was erected. Oil was discovered here in 1862 and several ore smelters were built in the area by 1891.

The tilde was added officially to the name of the city in 1994. It is one of the few cities in the US with such a designation.

The World's highest suspension brige, 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River. A quarter mile span, you may drive or walk across or take a trolley ride across. Lots to see and do here, including an incline railrail with a spectacular view, a theater with live entertainment, food and refreshments, shopping and more.
