Chamber of Commerce.
The location of this area near the Continental Divide brings about strong winter winds. Snowdrifts may grow huge due to the winds and may not melt at all until Spring. The cold, strong winds coupled with the low temperatures causes a wind chill which freezes exposed skin quickly. Those living and traveling in the area should dress accordingly.

History & History Related Items
The Cornish and Welsh miners here built many of the rock walls upon which the streets were built. These walls were built without mortar. Many of the walls survive today.
The Central City and Black Hawk area billed itself as the "richest square mile on earth" during the heyday of mining prior to the turn of the century. Although there is still "gold in them thar hills," the global mining economy is such that very little mining and milling occurs today although it is a legal use by right in many places.
There is also a new "gold rush" going on in this area. Limited Stakes Casino gaming began in Black Hawk and Central City in 1991 and has brought new life to the area with tourists.
