History & History Related Items

Originally, Kiowa was called Wendling after Henry Wendling, one of the first settlers in the area. He and George Fahrion bought hay from the locals when an Indian attack was feared. The name, Kiowa, comes from the Indian tribe of the same name.
The end of the "open range" by the government caused great dissention in the town. Ranchers were angry when the farmers put up fences. Their cattle couldn't graze as they were used to them doing. Some ranchers even burned the prairies to force the farmers out. Farmers, such as Mabel Whitehead said they couldn't be forced out - they simply put out the fires and kept on farming. Finally, they worked things out. Farmers lived on one side of town, Ranchers on the other!
