History & History Related Items


Richard Little of New Hampshire came in 1861 as an engineer. He surveyed an area several miles south of Denver. He like it so much that he filed a home stake and other land claims. In 1862, he brought his wife, Angeline, to live. She had been ill and the dry climate here nearly cured her! A plat was filed in 1872 by the Littles to form their property into the village of Littleton.
In 1902, Arapahoe County was divided in Denver, Adams, Washington, Yuma, and of course, Arapahoe Counties. The town of Littleton was named the temporary county seat. In an election in 1904, Littleton won a bid to become the permanent county seat against Englewood.

Littleton has a council-city manager form of government. There are seven council members, three of whom serve at large and four represent specific districts. The Mayor is elected by the council for a two year term. The council appoints the city manager.Littleton is the County Seat for Arapahoe County. There is also a small portion of Littleton located in Jefferson County.
