Though the town may be named for the founder or possibly for the railroad men who turned here on their way from the nearby zinc mine, no one is really sure of how Minturn was named. But the area has much history. Gold seekers came in the mid-1800's trying to strike it rich instantly. A narrow gauge railroad came through in 1887 and with it came opportunities for new jobs with the railroad causing a boom in the area whereby Minturn grew rapidly. Once in the area, many chose to stay due to the natural beauty of the area. For a more in-depth history and many historical pictures of Minturn, see this history page

Attractions
Nestled in a narrow valley between Vail and Beaver Creek Minturn is currently a bedroom community for the towns of Avon and Vail. Located in the White River National Forest, Minturn's biggest attraction is the surrounding beauty. A stratum of over 200-foot tall cliffs watch the town like a guardian. The most prominent feature, a rock in the shape of a lion's head, can be seen throughout the valley. To the south of town, with an elevation of 14,005 feet, is the Mt. of the Holy Cross. It's most prominent feature is the huge cirque in the shape of a cross that keeps snow throughout most of the summer. Minturn's town government sponsors a Summer Market every summer from June through September and a Winter Market in December.
