Mosca Pass is nearby. It was named for Luis de Moscoso de Alvarado, a Spanish explorer. Mosca was named for the pass. Other previous names for the area were Orean and Streator. It is basically uninhabited today though a few people still live in the area.

This 2,054 acre park and wildlife area is an important habitat for animals and nature. The facilities at the park were planned to minimize any disruption to the natural way of life for all the living things within the park area.
