By 1871, Nederland was called Middle Boulder. Previously, it was also known as Dayton and the Brownsville. It was also in 71 that the Boulder Canyon Road was finished and The ore from the Caribou Silver Mine was brought here for milling. The owner, Abel Breed, sold the mine in 1873 to a Dutch mining company, Nederland. The mill gradually became known as "the Nederlands," which means low lands. At the time of incorporation in 1874, the name of Nederland was chosen as the new name for the new town. The boom was not to continue, however. By 1890, Nederland had virtually become a ghost town as the mines declined. In the early 1900's, Tungsten was discovered and the old silver mill was converted over to processing tungsten. Nederland again grew larger, to nearly 3,000 residents. Since World War I, Nederland has basically faded with the exception of short revivals in Tungsten during World War II and in the early 1950's. Though the population has declined and mine and mill work has dwindled greatly, Nederland remains a beautiful spot and a good place to live.
