Kit Carson gave the name Rocky Ford to the rocky, gravelled crossing on the Arkansas River where he would camp when in the area. The town was platted 12 April 1887. Senator G.W. Swink was the founding father of Rocky Ford, Colorado and its first mayor. He is the one who developed the famous Rocky Ford Canteloupe.
