Though the area seems calm and serene today, back in the 1880s, a major stand-off occurred between the government and the settlers over the Maxwell Land Grant.
Nearby Monument Lake has an interesting legend. Two Indian chiefs were searching for water for their tribes. When they met, they embraced and cried with each other over the lack of water. They say a lake formed at their feet and a volcano erupted that enclosed them in rock in the center of the lake.
