Return to Index History & History Related Items Weston history: Weston was first known as Los Sisneros after a local rancher, Juan Sisneros. When the first post office was created in 1892, the name was changed to Weston. It was named for the postmaster at the time, Bert Weston, a local blacksmith. During the 1800's, the town had a few vices with gambling, saloons and a rather full jail. The Jicarilla Apaches often attacked and at one time, the Maxwell Land Grant Company tried to take over the town. A local legend has it that Black Jack Ketchum deposited the money he stole from a Wells Fargo wagon in this area, but it has never been found. Bosque del Oso State Wildlife Area 33,000+ acres fishing, camping, parking, hiking with limited accessibility for hunters Scenic Highway of Legends This route, Highway 12, was designated as one of Colorado's scenic and historical byways in 1987. It was named a National Forest Byway in 1988. The 80 mile route passes through wonderfully beautiful scenery on its course. It can be driven in about two hours. It winds through Walsenburg, La Veta, Cuchara, Monument Lake, Stonewall, Vigil, Weston, Segundo, Cokesdale and Trinidad crossing the Cuchara Pass at 9,994 feet above sea level part way along the byway.
