Return to Index The geography for Weston is in the eastern foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at the junciton of the North and south forks of the Purgatoire River. Nearby Culebra Peak is towers at 14,069 feet. Learn more about the Spanish Peaks on this page. One of the features of the Spanish Peaks are the dikes that radiate out. These were formed when molton magma moved up through vertical cracks. They hardened and were eventually exposed due to erosion. Return to Index
The weather in Weston is seasonal. There are over 300 days of sunshine each year. Snow may fall from September through April but severe weather is usually for a short period. The dry air helps both hot and cold temperatures more bearable. Most of the rain falls during the spring. Return to Index History & History Related Items Weston history: Weston was first known as Los Sisneros after a local rancher, Juan Sisneros. When the first post office was created in 1892, the name was changed to Weston. It was named for the postmaster at the time, Bert Weston, a local blacksmith. During the 1800's, the town had a few vices with gambling, saloons and a rather full jail. The Jicarilla Apaches often attacked and at one time, the Maxwell Land Grant Company tried to take over the town. A local legend has it that Black Jack Ketchum deposited the money he stole from a Wells Fargo wagon in this area, but it has never been found.
