The Yampa Valley was first inhabited by early tribes of Native Americans who left petroglyphs in various places. The Utes were the last tribe to live here exclusively. In the 1800's, the cattle and sheep ranchers moved in beginning the days of settlement for the area. This history included all of the typical "new west" gunfights and range wars. Things did settle down eventually with the area becoming stable, though not heavily populated.
