Bethel means "house of God." It was named such by the General Assembly of the Colony of Connecticut in 1759. The parish became a township in 1855.

Bethel Historical Firefighters Museum
on the firehouse property, contains firefighting memorabilia dating back to the 1790s.
The museum is open only on special occasions and by appointment. Local groups may arrange a tour of the museum by calling the firehouse at (203) 794-8523.
