History & History Related Items Cheshire history: Cheshire was settled in 1694 as part of the Town of Wallingford. It was incorporated as a town in 1780. For most of its history, Cheshire has been a rural farming area, but in the last 50 years has become more of a bedroom community for nearby Hartford and New Haven. One of the agricultural industries that has remained has been growers. In fact, the motto for Cheshire was chosen because of the many bedding plant growers here. Thousands of acres of open space have been mandated here helping the area to keep its rural character.
