Hartford was originally founded in 1635 when Thomas Hooker and his group came from Cambridge, Massachusetts to set up a community. The village was originally on both sides of the river. The eastern portion residents first tried to separate in 1726, but their proposal was rejected. Finally, after several more attempts, the petition was approved in 1783 and East Hartford was incorporated as a town. Return to Index
