History & History Related Items Newington history: Newington was first known by several different names, including Pipestave Swamp, Cow Plain and West Farms. Each name reflected an industry in the area or uses for the area. By 1721, enough farmers lived in the area for the General Assembly to grant the name of Newington to them. The name meant new town in the meadow. It was part of the Town of Wethersfield until 1871. Local residents wanted more sayso in their expenses and improvements and applied to the General Assembly for incorporation. Their petition was granted and approved in 1871.
