Newark was built at the crossroads of two Indian trails. It is also near the site of Delaware's only Revolutionary War battle at nearby Cooch's Bridge, just southeast of Newark. Betsy Ross's flag was first raised in battle at Cooch's Bridge on September 3, 1777
