Newport, Delaware Historical Events

1950's & 1960's
Remembrances of Newport
I remember Newport as a beautiful, tree lined, quaint little town when I was a little girl 45 years ago. Newport holds a special place in my heart. My great grandparents lived there, my grandparents lived there for 75 years and my mother was born in the family home on E. Christian Street. I remember Hottie Ingraham telling me he sold newspapers door to door and met my grandmother Marie Young Whiteman when they were about 11 years old on her front porch. My grandparents went home to be with the Good Lord in the 1970's and I have visited Newport several times since then.
I still can hear the four o'clock Dupont whistle, and smell the lunches at Leo's restaurant, where my grandmom served many hungry workers, and the fun my brother and I had sneaking thru the tiny secret door at Whites Drug store. The front porch where we rocked and snapped beans is still painted gray, and most of all, I am reminded of the train whistle in the distance at three o'clock in the morning, and tiny little fireflies in a jar next to my bed...Tho it has changed and my grandmother is long gone, I will forever hold a special place in my heart for Newport...and her.
Respectfully
