Fort Lauderdale Miscellaneous information

Fort Lauderdale Population:
1990 - 149,377
1995 - 149,491
2000 - 162,842 (projected)

The city has a nickname of "Venice of America." This was given because Lauderdale has approximately 310 miles of canals. That is more than they have in Venice, which is actually a composite of about 100 islands, though Venice has never been know to call itself the Lauderdale of Europe.
Fort Lauderdale has been known by other nicknames.
Fort LaDehDah - It isn't known where this one came from. Some say it is from the kick back vacation lifestyle, some say it was coined by the Spring Breakers, and others say it stems from the fact that Lauderdale is the home of the "idle rich."
Liquordale - simply because the vacationers and others do a lot of drinking
Leatherdale - There are many leather stores, leather motels or leather inns and leather bars.
Lauderdale used to be commonly known as "Where the Boys Are", taken from a 1960 movie in which four Midwestern co-eds traveled to Fort Lauderdale. Connie Francis sang a famous song of that title. The phrase, Where the Boys Are, isn't used or reported that much as it is a registered trade mark and various copyrights pertain to it.
