Frank Faris and the Baptist College of Florida
At the end of World War I, an enlisted U.S. Army pilot named Frank Faris settled, I believe, in Arcadia, where he taught flying at Carlstrom and Dorr Airfield. He was converted to Christianity by a visiting revivalist, and became ultimately a preacher. He was for several years Associational Missionary of the South Florida Baptist Association, based in Lakeland. He was the founding spirit and co-founder of the Baptist Bible Institute in 1943. This school, at first, was sponsored by the association, moved to Graceville (northwest Florida, Jackson County) in 1953 and 1954, was taken over by the Florida Baptist Convention in 1957. Today it is known as the Baptist College of Florida, and it is making moves to become the only university supported by the Florida Baptist Convention (Stetson University's support by this convention was discontinued some years ago).
This page is for perpetual written accounts of historical events that have occurred in the city. Anyone who feels they have pertinent information may submit it. This includes all people in or out of Graceville and could involve any interested adults or children with events or items that are of interest. Items may be submitted for publication on this page where they will remain as part of a historical archive for the city. Items of interest may include noteworthy events, special events of historical importance, information about area growth that pertains to the history of the city, and other pertinent notes. We hope to establish a large data base of information about the history of each city. Historical Societies are encouraged to open their own page on Key to the City for more extensive historical information.
