History & History Related Items

Before 1785, this area was a small settlement at Cedar Shoals, where a Cherokee trading trail and Oconee River crossed. It was incorporated as a city on 8 December 1806. A university site was chosen on a hill nearby. It was named Athens after Athens, Greece. Athens has the nation's first state chartered university. It became a cultural and educational center. Athens was also a "classic" southern city with mansions and southern belles. It continues to develop with industry and manufacturing.
