Augusta history:

Augusta became Georgia's second consolidated city when it merged with Richmond County in 1996. As the result, Augusta has become Georgia's 2nd largest city (with the 1998 population estimate of 187,689). The following large unincorporated communities that were deleted, due to the merger, were East Boundary, parts of Martinez, South Augusta, and West Augusta.
