Geneva Historical Events

1905
From Geneva, Georgia - We are sorry to announce through your columns the sad intelligence of the death of the late Rev. E. J. Fairfax, who was a faithful, true, and intelligent minister. He was also a former pastor of this circuit. It has been known that Elder Fairfax had a stroke of paralysis one year ago. At the last annual conference he asked to be superannuated. He continued to live at Geneva until last Saturday night at 12 o'clock when another stroke came upon him which consumed all his strength. No relief could be administered. He continued a victim to the disease until Tuesday at 3 o'clock when he quietly passed into that sweet beyond that awaited him. On Wednesday he was carried to Fort Valley for internment. His remains were accompanied by his wife, children and myself. The funeral took place at St. Paul A.M.E. church officiated by Dr. E. W. Lee, Rev. Me. E. Cawthorn, Rev. G. H. Hall and Rev Barnett, the pastors....signed M. E. Cawthorn

A letter from my Great-Grandmother, (wife of Rev. E. J. Fairfax) who lived and taught school in Geneva, stated " I will have to close school Friday as the people have put all the children in the field & I will have to lose two weeks. You know, I must see after my cotton, because this man will beat me sure & I owe $ 95.00 here in all. Now don't think I will clear 5 cents to put on my house. What do you think my horse is worth? I sure do hate to sell her, but I will have to do so, my baby loves her so much....
