History & History Related Items Winterville history: Here is a history page for Winterville Winterville was first known as "Six-Mile Station," when it was first established in the 1840's. It was a depot for the railroad for wood and water about six miles east of Athens. The first section foreman was Heinrich winter for whom the depot was renamed. In 1866, Heinrich's cousin, John, became the postmaster. It was at this time that the name was officially changed to Winterville. Winterville has originally established as in the 1840s as "Six-Mile Station," a Georgia Railroad depot for wood and water six miles east of Athens. At first, the community was located in both Clarke and Oglethorpe Counties. In 1906, the state gave the citizens the opportunity to choose which county they would be in. The vote went to Clarke County.
