History:

Fayette County was not formed from other counties, but instead was ceded from the Creek Indian Nation during the Land Lottery Draw of 1821. At that time, five new counties were created: Fayette, Henry, Houston, Dooly and Monroe. It was the 49th county created in the state. When established, Fayette County reached up to Atlanta and over to the other side of Jonesboro. Since then, four new counties have come out of Fayette County's boundaries because Campbell County was divided up into Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton and Spalding Counties. Fayette County was named for Marquis de LaFayette, a Revolutionary War soldier who fought with General George Washington in the conflict. Many of the local settlers were also Revolutionary War Veterans and came from those areas, remembering the Marquis and his valor in the war.

The county has the oldest courthouse in Georgia still in municipal use today, that of the Fayetteville courthouse in the town square. It was built in 1825. Fayetteville was named the county seat of Fayette County in 1823.
