Attractions
Papaikou is only 4 miles from Old Town Hilo. It is on the Hamakua Coast and has a surfing beach at the mouth of the Kapue stream. It is used mostly by the locals for both surfing and fishing and is very lovely. It also has blue travertine stones on the beach as well as lava rock and black sand. Papaikou is an old plantation village and is one of the most stable communities in Hawaii. There are very few houses sold in Papaikou on the market since they are usually passed to family. The community is made up of people of many ethnic origins. It has its own post office which is often used by people from other communities since it is difficult to mail packages from Hilo without a long wait.
