History & History-related items
Originally known as Summit Cut because it was the high point in Iowa on the Rock Island Railroad and also because of the ridge which formed the watershed divide between the Mississippi and the Missouri Rivers. During 1872, George C. Tallman laid out the town of Adair on his own land. The town was platted and filed with the county on 20 August 1872. The name was for General John Adair who was an officer during the War of 1812. He was also the sixth governor of Kentucky.
A noteworthy event for Adair involved the notorious outlaw, Jesse James. He and his gang committed the world's first robbery of a moving train on 21 July 1873 just west of Adair.
