Fort Madison average annual rainfall is 39.81 inches per year History & History Related Items Fort Madison history: The original fort was built in 1804 soon after a treaty was signed. The treaty gave lands east of the river to Americans for some money and several conditions. The Sauk tribe thought the fort was for a trader who would help them get provisions. Their leader, Black Hawk, went with the British during the War of 1812 because of the broken promises. Later, the fort was burned by the Americans as they fled the Native Americans there. The replica of the original fort was built in 1983 and continues to be a good representation of a frontier fort with an interactive museum and many exhibits.
