History & History Related Items

Humeston history:

Alva Humeston came to the area in 1864, working a large farm near what is now Humeston. The CB&Q Railroad bought 80 acres on the northeast side of the farm to build a town. They named it Humeston for the man from whom they purchased the acreage. He was said to be a good, Christian man who set a good example for everyone around. He died at his son-in-law's home on 29 May 1889 in Fairfield, Iowa after an illness. The Humeston Railroad Depot and wooden Water Tower
This attraction was built around 1872. The first railroad was the Humeston-Shenendoah Railroad which was later part of the CB&Q (Chicago, Burlington & Quincy) Railroad. The depot is near the Humeston RV Park in the northern part of town.
