From Pioneer History of Pocahontas County, 1904, Page 573: "The town of Varina was located on the lands of Jacob Hauser, NE1/4 Sec. 31, along the survey of the C.M.& St.P.Ry., about July 1 1899. Its pretty and romantic name was adopted one month later by the railway company at the suggestion of the author of this work. He noticed that in the nomenclature of this county the names of Rolfe and Powhatan, her husband and father, had been appropriated from the story of Pocahontas. Varina was the name given to her home after marriage, on the James River, Virginia. The use of this name tends to complete the list of proper names found in her story."
