During the 1860's, it was a base camp in the gold rush of that area. The Nez Perce Indians made it a favorite summer camping spot. It is especially known for the raising of lentils, dry peas, wheat and barley. It is the home of the University of Idaho which was established in 1889, even before Idaho became a state.
