Pocatello is named for a Bannock chief who gave to the Utah & Northern railroad the right of way for their lines. It was originally part of theFort Hall Indian Reservation. In 1882, the Union Pacific Railroad also arrived in the area. Along with the Midwest and Pacific Northwest railroad, a tent city sprang up where all three railroads came together.
