History & History Related Items

Rathdrum history: Rathdrum was first called "Westwood", after a pony express rider and land developer, Charles Wesley Wood. It was the county seat for Kootenai County in 1881. After the election in 1908, the county seat was moved to Coeur d'Alene. The city's name was changed to Rathdrum in the late 1800's. The name of Rathdrum was chosen for the birthplace of a local Irish businessman, Rathdroma. The area had been used by traders and Indians many years before the city was founded. Several major fires in town have destroyed much of the early buildings, but one structure, the oldest brick church in the state of Idaho, is the Saint Stanislaus Church.
