History & History Related Items
Rathdrum was first called "Westwood", after a pony express rider and land developer, Charles Wesley Wood. It was the county seat for Kootenai County in 1881. After the election in 1908, the county seat was moved to Coeur d'Alene. The city's name was changed to Rathdrum in the late 1800's. The name of Rathdrum was chosen for the birthplace of a local Irish businessman, Rathdroma. The area had been used by traders and Indians many years before the city was founded. Several major fires in town have destroyed much of the early buildings, but one structure, the oldest brick church in the state of Idaho, is the Saint Stanislaus Church.

I am looking for an ancestor!
I am a direct descendent of Captain William Cobleigh, a veteran of the 14th N.H. Veteran Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He was a student, I believe at Dartmouth College, before the war. He and a brother, Charles, were from West Milan, NH, both were serving in Company "E" at wars end. After the war, he moved to Rathdrum, Idaho and became a clergyman. He was married, had one son at the close of the war, but beyond that I know nothing about him.
If there is a local "historian" I would love to know if there is any local history pertaining to this man.
