Edwards County Historical Society Museum and Library houses its relics, manuscripts, and books of reference at the West Main Street birthplace of Louis Lincoln Emmerson, Governor of Illinois from 1929 to 1933. The society was organized in 1939 and began keeping its present site in 1941. The house was built sometime between 1857 and 1860. In the near future the group will also assume the preservation of the Edwards County Jail building. Built in 1859, it stands on the Courthouse Square. In 1980 the Society published a "History of Edwards County, Illinois, 1814-1980" and began a quarterly newsletter. In 1993, the Society published a 528 page book chronicling area history and families entitled, "History of Edwards County Illinois." The Edwards County Historical Society serves as a valuable resource for historical and genealogical research.
