The village of Alpha was created on 1 June 1872 and was considered one of the railroad towns. Anson Calkins laid out the village which he named Alpha for the first letter of the Greek alphabet. He did so because he believed the village to be the beginning of a great city. Incorporation occurred on 11 January 1895.
