Astoria history:

The old city hall in Astoria used to be named, "Dogbury Hall". The reason it was called this is very logical. In the 1800s, stray dogs posed a problem. At times, there were so many strays that a way of thinning the dog population was needed. It was decided to have "dog hangings" at the city hall, and afterwards the dogs were buried behind the hall. In this way, the hall acquired the name of "Dogbury Hall". (This information from "Astoria's Sesquecentenial, 1836 to 1966")
The founding of Astoria: 1836
