Looking for my Family
My name is Alex Haverbeke and I live in Belgium. My grandfather
August Van Hijfte left Belgium in 1912 or 1913 to live in Atkinson, Illinois.
Late 1913 or early 1914 he came back to Belgium, but at Atkinson he
became godfather of a child named Margriet (or Margret) Van Herreweghe,
born at that time, and child of one of his relatives living there too.
After the great war, my grandfather didn't go back to the US and
all contacts were lost until the late 50's, when (I wass a small boy
then) a Belgian (a Mr. Martens) living in Illinois came to visit my home
village looking for relatives of the Van Herreweghe family. As a result,
letters and pictures were exchanged with (with the help of a local
schoolteacher who was one of the very few people understanding English in our
village). After my grandfathers death in 1968, all contact was lost again.
Recently we started talking within the family about this episode, and we would like to know if there are still people living in or around Atkinson
related to the Van Herreweghe family, and if Margret is still alive (which is
not impossible).
If anyone can help or has information, please contact me!
Thank you very much
