Benton was the site of the last public hanging in Illinois. Hundreds turned out to see the hanging of gangster Charlie Birger outside the town jail, which is now a museum.

Beatle George Harrison spent the summer of 1963 in Benton, even scheduling a concert at the Benton Country Club for his band back home (in England). When he returned in '64 with his band the success was so great that the concert at the country was inevitably canceled.

Actress Bo Derek spent some of her childhood vacation time visiting relatives in Benton in the same neighborhood that actor John Malkovich and basketball start Doug Collins were being raised.
