Settlers came to this area developing a ferry system across the Kaskaskia River in 1812. Carlyle is the county seat of Clinton County.

Carlyle Lake has over 26,000 acres of lake-related activities It is the largest man-made lake in Illinois.

General Dean Suspension Bridge is just outside of Carlyle. It is 130 years old and one of the oldest suspension bridges in the area. It is listed on the National Register of Historic places.
