Cherry Historical Events
1909, November 13November 13, 1909, 259 people died in a mining accident in Cherry Illinois. It happened when a cart of hay was sent down for the forty mules in the mine. The miners were using kerosene lanterns because the electric lighting was out. When the hay cart arrived to the bottom, the hay caught fire and soon spread. Of the 259 people killed, no less then 24 were townsfolk that went into the mine again and again to save the miners.
