History & History Related Items Colona history: Colona was merged with Green Rock in 1997 - combined population is 5,000 Colona attractions: The City of Colona has a paved bike path that runs along the Hennepin Canal. This bike path has two ball diamonds, a pavillion, two playgrounds, several park benches, covered picnic tables, two water fountains and a gazebo. Many people walk, skate and bike along this path daily. The Hennepin Canal empties into the Rock River and is a favorite spot for fisherman. There are many businesses within a short distance from the path. We have many area churches of differing denominations to accommodate the spiritual needs of our residents. We have 11 full-time and 6 part-time police officers and a volunteer fire dept, which lead the area in training and equipment. We recently built an emergency heliport just outside of town that serves as emergency medical transport for a large area. The former Village of Colona and the City of Green Rock merged in May 1997 to form what is now known as the City of Colona. This is the first merger of two cities in the history of Illinois.
