"Although Decatur was officially laid out on June 1, 1829, it underwent some of its greatest changes in the first quarter of this century. After the first railroad touched here in 1854, the city began to grow and, less than a half century later, it was a community of over 30,000 people. In the early 1900's, Decatur even had two automobile factories. One made the "Comet" and the other made the "Pan-American" from an article in the "Decatur Tribune", 30 April 1997 We are referred to as the Soy Bean Capital of the World, with AE Staley and Archer Daniels Midland here in town. We used to have cable cars downtown, and all sorts of other interesting things.
