Hoopeston was named for Thomas Hoopes, the man who gave the land for the crossing of the two railroads that would intersect the town. It was platted in 1871. Greer College was established here in 1890 by a gift of money and land by John Greer.

Third Saturday in June each year
Drivin the Dixie Days
Held to celebrate Illinois' first state highway. It was known as the Hubbard Trail, then state route 1 and then as the Dixie Highway. Communities along the highway band together to hold this vintage car tour each year. Labor Day Weekend each year
Sweetcorn Festival
Place: Throughout the Community of Hoopeston Illinois Sponsored by: Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce & multiple Service-oriented Organizations information: Held annually on Labor Day Weekend the National Sweet Corn Festival has become a tradition.
Many events are hosted throughout the community ranging from Parades, to tractor Pulls to the National SweetHeart Pageant, to corn eating contests, dances, and so much more!!!
