Here is a history page

Kansas was founded in 1853 by Lovel Wilhoit and known as Midway. It was later, in 1858, when Midway applied for a post office, that they learned there was another Midway in Fulton County. For this reason, the name was changed to Kansas, which was also the name of the fairly new township of the same name.
