History & History-related items
Oquawka(Oquawkiek) which is south of Keithsburg, approximately 12 miles, was named by the Sac and Fox Indians. The name means Yellowbanks, named due to the yellow sandy soil on the riverbanks and designating their territory. New Boston is located to the north and west of Keithsburg and is known as Upper Yellowbanks. The Yellowbanks Heritage Association was formed in 1983 to preserve the history of the area and to promote tourism and the economic development of the territory.
It was founded in 1837 by Robert Keith, who came here from Scotland in 1834.
Keithsburg is a small town located on the Mississippi River. There were fourteen buildings placed on the National Register of Historic Places, but the flood of 1993 has destroyed several of those buildings.

Attractions
In the 1980's, a lot of volunteers worked very hard on a campground project which now is located right along the river. It is one of the prettiest camping areas on the river. There are presently 47 campsites, two bathroom/shower facilities, electrical and water hookups. Forty new sites will be added plus a shelter building and volleyball sand court.
During the summer months, we have many tourists since Keithsburg is located on the Great River Road. People from all over come to enjoy boating, camping, fishing, hiking, etc.
